It's a national holiday in many Mediterranean (and other Catholic) countries, such as Spain, Portugal, Greece, Chile, Colombia, etc. etc. Only in Italy it's called "Ferragosto" though, a (pagan) celebration that dates back to the time of the Roman Emperor Augustus.
In Italy most people go to the beach, to relax, meet up with family and friends and to enjoy never-ending lunches! A traditional Ferragosto dish is grilled pigeon, but many italians just have a 'regular' BBQ or 'grigliata' on the beach. Buon appetito!
