Blue continues to be a strong colour for the the spring/summer collections. It's vibrant, stands out, is memorable and fresh.....even though it was already dominating the Autumn/Winter collections!
This is a trend that carries you from the cold, cold winter right into spring.
This spring, designers take their ispiration from Yves Saint Laurent's electric blue (think Rive Gauche) to the beautiful cobalt blue that can be found in Renaissance paintings.
Did you know that blue only became a popular and positive colour in the Middle Ages? In ancient Greece and Rome it was considered a negative hue. This is because in Greek mythology the god Zeus would make rain when he was sad and therefore blue became related to rain and sadness. Furthermore, blue was associated with the blue eyes of their enemies, the uncivilized Barbarians.
But come Christianity, blue became the colour of the virgin Mary, shown here on a fresco in Florence, Italy.
From then on, it symbolized serenity and tranquility.
Now ladies (and gentlemen), I don't know if that's the state of mind that you want to radiate, but I'm sure you'll be looking "très chic" if you do decide to wear it. I'm already provided for.....with this gorgeous dress by Antik Batik!
